Hello,
I am presenting and writing a proposal to add G.I.E. to the anti-discrimination laws in Tampa.
I need to find texts that pertain to trans-rights, trans-issues, genderqueer, etc.
I have googled many things, but I do not know who is THE scholar(s) in these issues or who is most renowned. I have web sources, but lack a more academic basis. I am basically looking for a 101 book on anything trans/queer. I need to be able to field basic questions on this topic almost expertly. (So- the less dense the better- considering I am in a time crunch). I am trying to avoid looking like an idiot when I present this information in a week to the Human Rights Board in Tampa.
The most difficult questions, according to my attorney, will involve bathroom use while transitioning. Personal stories will be most valuable.
Also,
If you know of any books/experience on personal stories pertaining to violations of rights (because of being queer/trans) such as: housing discrimination, employment, bathroom use, crime, etc. THAT would me very valuable.
Thank you for your input!
-Sara

Wed, October 31, 2007 - 12:38 AMhey sara,
i'm curious what got you interested in undertaking this project?
i know lots of people who have gotten kicked out of bathrooms and changerooms by security guards because they did not appear to be 'real men' or 'real women.'
sorry i don't have any books offhand to recommend to you
=)
good luck!! i'm so glad you're doing this!!

Wed, October 31, 2007 - 8:57 AMYou might want to try getting hold of Kate Bornstein, who is a very well regarded author/educator on trans issues. She lives in NYC and is fairly accessible.

Wed, October 31, 2007 - 2:23 PMhey Sara,
i would agree with Janet that Kate B. would be yr best bet. . . . im guessing you must have some kind of support/resource groups in FL that can help you too? here in BC, my good friend helped spearhead the movement to get fully accessible bathrooms at SFU, a big university in vancouver, 3 yrs ago. . .about the same time McGill got off their ass, too. you could google it, sounds like you've been doing alot of that lately tho.
good luck! let us know what goes down.

Fri, November 2, 2007 - 11:29 AMThanks!
I got interested because of the SCC in Atlanta. I went to see my roommate give a presentation. It was an amazing event. I am on the Human Rights Board in Tampa and that is where GIE starts out. SO i got lucky. I just decided to take on the issue since I was a board member.
Thanks for the advice- I will look into it. I hear this is going to be a fight here in Tampa- so look out!
There are surprisingly not any support groups in Tampa that I am aware of . I know of one in St. Pete, but it is not political. I think Equality Florida is sending me an expert- so I am very grateful for that. His name is Tobias Packer- very good guy, does a lot of Trans work. I am very excited. I just hope I don't screw it up! haha.
I will keep everyone posted. -

Re: Books for Research
Sun, November 4, 2007 - 5:32 AMThank you Larkin,
But I am doing nothing compared to thousands who have fought for the family. I love this family so much it hurts. The queer family. I just read Stone Butch Blues in 12 hours. I couldn't stop. Even now I cannot stop weeping. I don't know why. I just can't.
I don't feel worthy of thanks after seeing what others have been through- I don't even mean that in a pitiful way either- I mean I see what others had to deal with before me and my biggest challenge is some slight slandering haha. I feel like building some kind of memorial to what the giants did for us queers. I wonder if I could have done what they did back then? Anyway, I am just an emotional wreak after reading that book. haha. What you said meant a lot to me. -

Re: Books for Research
Sat, November 3, 2007 - 6:02 AMHey Sara
Just finished a book that I found interesting and insightful about the many variations Genderqueer can take.
the title is "GENDERqUEER, Voices from Beyond the Sexual Binary" edited by Joan Nestle, Clare Howell, and Riki Wilchins, Alyson Publications, 2002.
I found it in our local Borders but Alyson has a web site whish is of course www.alyson.com.
Since I have finished it I can send it if you want it.

That sounds perfect. I think that is exactly what I am looking for. I hope it doesn't kill me like Leslie- that damn book shattered my world! haha.
I don't want you to have to go through the trouble of sending it. I have a friend who is lending me her library card for USF. So i will see if i can get it there. Otherwise, I will buy it for my own library.
Love,
Sara
